How to Become a Marketing Manager From a Freelance Creative Work Background
Moving from freelance creative work (design, writing, video, photography, etc.) into a Marketing Manager role is a realistic and fairly common transition, but it's not just "getting hired for what you already do." Freelancers are usually judged on the quality of a single deliverable; Marketing Managers are judged on whether a portfolio of campaigns and channels moves business metrics like pipeline, revenue, or retention over a quarter. The jump is easier if you've already run your freelance business like a small agency (managing clients, budgets, deadlines) and harder if your freelance work has been purely execution-focused (e.g., only doing the design or the writing, with someone else handling strategy and client relationships).
